Nigeria's Mobile Betting Boom Drives Record Growth in 2024

Nigeria's sports betting market has experienced unprecedented growth in 2024, driven primarily by mobile-first operators and smartphone penetration. Major platforms like Bet9ja, SportyBet, and 1xBet have reported significant increases in active users, with mobile transactions accounting for over 85% of all bets placed.
Industry analysts estimate the market value has surpassed ₦500 billion annually, making Nigeria one of Africa's largest gambling markets. The surge follows continued smartphone adoption and improved mobile payment infrastructure across the country.
Regulatory bodies, including the National Lottery Regulatory Commission, have responded with enhanced responsible gambling initiatives. New measures include mandatory age verification systems, self-exclusion tools, and mandatory responsible gambling messaging across all advertising platforms.
"Mobile accessibility has transformed the landscape," says industry analyst Chinedu Okafor. "Operators are investing heavily in user-friendly apps and USSD-based betting options to reach rural areas."
The growth has also attracted international partnerships, with several Nigerian clubs securing sponsorship deals with betting companies. However, consumer advocacy groups continue to push for stronger player protection measures as the market expands.
