Malawi's result board is close to fair. Its long shots are anything but

The best match-result board in Malawi this weekend prices at 0.67%, which is as near to a fair book as retail betting gets. The same market shades a long shot harder than any other on this series.
Both of those statements describe the same board. A short price here is excellent, and the further out you go the faster the value falls away, until the outsider is being shaded by close to ten percent.
It is the sharpest illustration this board can offer of a simple point: a market is not cheap or expensive on its own. It is cheap or expensive for the bet you are making.
Near-perfect on the favourite. Close to ten percent off on the outsider. One board, one afternoon.

Hull City against Manchester United returns a board that adds up to less than a whole book at the best available prices. That is the market pulling in two directions at once, and it is a measure of disagreement rather than an opportunity, because the shortest of those prices will move first.
Everything else lands between roughly one and three percent, with the Friday opener the widest of them.
What each market costs
Margin is what the odds carry above a fair book. Malawi's three markets sit close together, and all of them respond to comparison.
- Match result5.12% at a typical book, 0.67% at the best available price
- Over and under 2.5 goals5.50% at a typical book, 3.22% at the best available price
- Both teams to score5.86% at a typical book, 4.18% at the best available price
Match result is the standout. Taking the best available number rather than a typical one removes almost the entire cost, which is not something many markets can say.
Goals markets improve too, but they start lower and finish higher, so the proportional gain is smaller. Malawi is a good market for result bettors and an ordinary one for everybody else.
The house setting the standard
Averaged across the same matches: overall, match result, over and under 2.5 goals, both teams to score.
- Bandabets3.34% overall · 0.91% · 3.54% · 5.57%
- Betika4.68% overall · 4.08% · 5.01% · 4.95%
- MWOS4.95% overall · 4.90% · 4.96% · 4.99%
- betPawa4.98% overall · 5.01% · 4.98% · 4.95%
- WSBetting5.88% overall · 5.89% · 6.30% · 5.44%
- Premier Bet7.06% overall · 6.07% · 8.06%
- Betway8.05% overall · 9.01% · 8.00% · 7.13%
Bandabets prices the match result at 0.91%. That is not a retail number, it is an exchange number, and it explains why this market's best board is as tight as it is.
The rest of the table is conventional and clusters around five percent. The distance from the leader to the field is larger than the distance across the whole of the field.
Where the board disagrees
The widest gaps of the weekend, then the bands that make sense of them.
- Manchester City v Bournemouth, away win5.40 at one book against 7.00 at another, 30% better
- Hull City v Manchester United, home win7.00 at one book against 9.00 at another, 29% better
- Manchester City v Bournemouth, the draw4.70 at one book against 5.50 at another, 17% better
- Hull City v Manchester United, the draw4.50 at one book against 5.25 at another, 17% better
- Brighton v Aston Villa, the draw3.45 at one book against 4.00 at another, 16% better
- Favourites, under 2.002.88% below the best price on average
- Middling prices, 2.00 to 4.004.09% below
- Long shots, over 4.009.22% below
Bournemouth to win at Manchester City is available at 5.40 in one place and 7.00 in another, which is close to a third more for the same opinion. On MWK 10,000 that is MWK 16,000 of difference.
The ladder below is remarkably steep. A favourite is shaded by under three percent and a long shot by more than nine, which means the entire cost of betting here is concentrated in the outcomes least likely to happen.
How quickly the best board is reached
With one house well clear of the field, the question is what the rest of the market adds.
- Bandabets63% of the best prices, 99.6% of the value
- Adding WSBetting81% of the best prices, 99.9% of the value
- Adding Betika97% of the best prices, 100.0% of the value
- Adding betPawa100% of the best prices, 100.0% of the value
The leader captures almost all of the value alone. What the others add is coverage rather than price, which matters on the outcomes the leader happens not to top.
What the first weekend suggests
Bet short prices here and you are getting a very good deal. The match-result board is close to fair. Few markets in this series can say that, and it is worth using while it lasts.
Bet long prices and check every one. The penalty on outsiders is the steepest thing on this board. On those bets, and only those, the second price is where the value is.
Watch whether the leader holds its line. A house pricing results below one percent is unusual enough that the question is whether it is a policy or an opening position. The next few rounds answer it.
This is the first instalment. Each round is measured the same way.

Method
Odds from the Malawian bookmakers listed above on the Premier League fixtures of 21 to 24 August 2026, as at 18 August. Margin is the sum of the implied probabilities of every outcome in a market, less 100%. The best available price takes the highest number quoted on each outcome anywhere in the Malawian market. Percentages beside a fixture are the market's own view of it once margin is stripped out. Odds move; the numbers here describe a snapshot, not a guarantee. 18+. Bet responsibly.
